A Question For Cloture Girl – February 16, 2010

Many of the internships asked for a writing sample, what should you use for the writing sample?

The general rule for writing samples, provided that a word length is not given, is 3-7 pages. You want it to be long enough to give a sense of your style but not so long as to get tossed aside. Search through your current school papers or anything that you have ever submitted for publication. Much like a writing sample for graduate school or a scholarship, a writing sample for an internship should be tailored toward the audience who will read it. If you are applying for a press internship and have taken communications classes, a paper from one of those classes would likely be ideal. If you are applying to a committee, choose one that relates to the work the committee does in some way. If you are applying to the office of a particular Member, research his or her committee assignments and legislative priorities. Then choose your sample accordingly. I would take a little time researching the office you are applying to on the internet. In addition, if you are applying for an internship in a Republican or Democratic office, remember to choose a sample that reflects that reality. Lastly, don’t forget to edit!
Thanks again for your question. Keep em coming!
Signing out for this week.
