February 1st marks the 26th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a day to celebrate and promote girls’ and women’s participation and excellence in sports. NGWSD is marked annually with events around the country and on Capitol Hill to commemorate the achievements of girls and women in athletics. Our 2012 theme is “Title IX at 40: In it for the Long Run” and our advocacy efforts are focused on ensuring that girls and women have access to physical fitness opportunities. Being physically active has a profound impact on the life of a woman or girl. Research shows that sports participation not only has tremendous health benefits, but also increases graduation rates, lowers rates of substance abuse and teen pregnancy, and improves employment outcomes.
