The new DC Taxi Fare change went into effect this past weekend (started on Saturday, April 21, 2011).
Here are a few things you need to know:
The per-mile rate will move from $1.50 to $2.16, and the waiting fee, which kicks in any time a cab is moving less than 10 mph, will go up from $15 an hour to $25 an hour. Brutal right? Sadly, the $1 gas fee is still in place. In almost certain, gas prices will be high this summer, so it’s almost acceptable.
D.C. Taxicab Commission Chairman Ron Linton stated reasoning for the new increase is because it: “…would improve driver’s revenue while not adversely affecting the riding public.” Apparently, Mr. Linton can afford these new fare increases and it doesn’t adversely affect him. But, one thing is for sure — if you use cabs, you will feel the pinch.
Taxi drivers won’t be able to charge some of their previous extra fees under the new rules. This includes BS fees like .50 cent per (luggage) bag fee, as well as the $1 extra passenger fee. This should help with late night cab rides back from the bar, or when you get kicked to the curb by your lady.
The official deadline for the transition to the adjusted meters is May 31, 2012. All re-calibrated meters will have a RED DCTC Seal — so make sure to review the meter, and look for the new seal if the driver attempts to include any additional fees.
While meters are a vast improvement over the zone system, the system does still seem flawed — as I usually am left feeling nickel and dimed when I ride a cab. (Even after the driver slowly counts your change in an effort to remind you of a tip.)
Many new visitors to the DC area could be left wondering: What else is out there? You do have options. The Metro is a safe bet, opening at 5am Monday through Friday (7am on Saturday and Sunday) and closing at Midnight on weekdays and 3am on weekends.
But if you’re in a hurry or want to impress? May we suggest looking at UBER. Uber, as you may already know, is a personal luxury transportation service that will provide you a safe and clean ride home. They were kind enough to give our readers a $10 promotion. Use CLOTURECLUB when you sign up!
