The Capital Wine Festival kicked off its 2013 celebration of wine and with a Grand Opening Reception on January 25th at The Fairfax at Embassy Row Hotel!
This year's opening reception hosted many local wineries as well as the featured wineries for this year's festival. The featured wines this year are Burgess Cellars, Calder Wine Company, Darioush Winery, Heitz Wine Cellars, Miner Family Winery, Patz and Hall, Pine Ridge Vineyards, Pio Cesare, Tres Sabores Winery, and Wine and Soul.
Upon entering the ballroom you are handed a glass of Moet champagne and you immediately know that this is a sophisticated crowd that really enjoys wine. Each wine station had a vineyard representative or wine distributor pouring their wine. They were extremely knowledgeable and enjoyed chatting about their offerings. Many of the wine reps also gave you advice on what food to pair with their individual wines.
To accompany the grand opening reception wine tasting, Chef Chris Ferrier from 2100 Prime created a wonderful buffet tasting menu that paired exquisitely with the wines being served. Some of the crowd pleasing dishes were his Scallop ceviche with Coriander and Furikake; the Slow Roasted Sirloin of Beef, Arugula, Grilled Asparagus, Red Wine Reduction; and the Grilled Arctic Char; Orange, Beet and Lentil Salad. My personal favorite was the scallop ceviche served in a scallop shell for presentation. The scallop was plump and perfectly seasoned with the salty Furikake that complimented the dish’s acid. The buffet also included specialty cheeses from all over the country that were selected to pair with specific wines.
I really enjoyed the experience. For the price of the opening reception ticket ($65) you got a wonderful evening of tasting great wines and a bountiful buffet of Chef Chris Ferrier’s creations.
The festival will continue hosting events and tastings featuring these wineries every Tuesday evening in February and March. To get tickets to these individual dinners, please visit their website.
