Dow Chemical Briefing on Solar Energy Technology

Location: Cannon 122 – House Office Building
Description: Some of the most exciting work in manufacturing today is in the field of domestic solar technologies that will help power our homes, businesses and manufacturing facilities. Despite recent headlines, many of these solar technologies are poised for widespread, commercial use and they are creating jobs and adding to economic growth today.

Dow has made a commitment to develop affordable solar innovations that achieve widespread commercial adoption, and is currently manufacturing products in the U.S. that will help make solar technology attractive and affordable to the public. The 2011-2012 product rollout plans include the states of: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas. We expect to create more than 1,200 U.S. manufacturing jobs by 2014 to support the production of our solar products, including our POWERHOUSE ™ Solar Shingle that we launched to the public earlier this month.

This briefing will provide an excellent opportunity to discuss trends in the solar industry and will include information on Dow’s success in commercializing affordable solar technologies. Pat Nugent, the director of new business development at Dow Solar Solutions, a unit of The Dow Chemical Company, will discuss and answer questions about the current landscape and future of solar technology.

To learn more about these trends within the industry and what it could mean for jobs and the economy, we invite you and your staff to join us at 10:00 am on Monday, November 7th in Cannon 122.

To RSVP or for more details on the briefing, please contact Michael Green at mgreen@golinharris.com or 703-741-7531.

IRF Caucus – Chick-fil-A Lunch

Location: 2212 Rayburn
Description: The International Religious Freedom Caucus, of which Mr. Shuler is Co-Chairman, urges you to join them for a presentation and discussion next Monday, 31 October from 12:30-1:30pm in 2212 Rayburn. The Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life will set the groundwork by discussing the release of their new report, “Rising Restrictions on Religion.” The report found that restrictions on religious beliefs and practices rose during 2006-2009 in 23 of the world’s 198 countries. Religious freedom restrictions affect more than 2.2 billion people, nearly a third of the world’s total population.

After the hearing about the current status of global religious freedom restrictions, we will then turn to a staff meeting led by Tina Ramirez at the Becket Fund. We will discuss the tools staff need to handle the rising persecution of religious minorities, and Tina will share her experiences as a congressional staffer who solely focused on religious freedom. With the rise in persecution of religious groups in the Arab Spring, our offices will only be engaging with these issues more in the coming months.

Tina offers a wealth of information and is an outstanding contact for religious freedom issues. More information about this briefing is below.

What: Briefing led by the Becket Fund and Pew Research Center
Objective: Discuss Pew’s recent religious freedom report and learn how to handle specific religious freedom issues / cases.

A religious freedom binder will be given to each attending staff member that gives necessary State Department, Hill, and NGO contacts and provides resources and background for religious freedom issues.

When: Monday, October 31st 12:30-1:30pm

Where: 2212 Rayburn
Start Time: 12:30
